The anticipated arrival of a newborn baby is an event that has many first time parents reaching for the credit card. Small baby clothes are adorable and often irresistible and it is easy to get carried away when shopping. However you should remember that you are likely to receive many clothing items as gifts and you may end up with more little outfits than you can physically use! Newborn babies grow fast and will usually outgrow their first size of clothing within a few weeks.
It is important to be prepared however and there is a basic list of items that every baby should have, as well as many optional extras if you have the spare budge for shopping. It can help to check items off against a list to help you feel prepared and stop you from buying too many items.
In terms of clothing, most small babies live in all-in-one outfits for at least their first few weeks of life. They will spend most of the time sleeping and these outfits are comfortable and make dressing and nappy changing easy. The most common types are baby vests or short sleeve body suits consisting of little t-shirts or vests with poppers between the legs, and sleep suits which cover the whole body apart from the head and usually have a zip or popper fastening down the front. In addition to these items, your baby will need a couple of hats, socks, scratch mitts and a coat or pram suit if the season is cold.
You will also need supplies for bathing your baby. Stock up on wet wipes, cotton wool and items like baby wash and baby shampoo. Buy some small baby towels that are used only for your baby - hooded towels look cute and keep your baby warm after his bath. Muslin squares are useful for quick clean ups and of course you'll need lots of nappies!
Apart from this, all your baby really needs is somewhere to sleep and some bottles if you don't plan to breast feed -save the bigger purchases for when they're older and start interacting and you can go wild choosing toys!
